Clarification on Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Licensed Audiologists & Dispensing Audiologists

Current Requirements for Two-Year License Expiration

  • Licensed Audiologists are required to obtain twenty-four (24) hours of CPD every two years in order to renew the Audiology License.
  • No more than fifty percent (50%) of the hours obtained may be from courses where the content focuses on equipment, devices, or other products of a particular manufacturer.
  • Dispensing Audiologists must obtain nine (9) hours of continuing professional development annually in hearing aid dispensing, through courses that must be approved by the Board. Upon renewal of the Dispensing Audiology License, the licensee must acquire a total of eighteen (18) hours in hearing aid dispensing courses. The certification of compliance for all CPD is documented on the biennial renewal form.
  • It is permissible for Dispensing Audiologists to apply some of the hearing aid related coursework toward the twenty-four (24) hour requirement. However, the fifty-percent (50%) course content limitation noted above does apply. Therefore, no more than twelve (12) hours every two years may be in hearing aid related coursework where the content of the course is product-specific.
  • Licensed Audiologists may obtain a maximum of six (6) hours in self-study. Self-study does not include live/ interactive course offerings available via internet. Therefore, hours obtained through live/interactive course offerings are unlimited.

Effective March 2, 2011:  Upon the expiration of your current 2-year license, the following new changes are now in effect for Dispensing Audiologists

  • The Dispensing Audiologist renewal cycle is a one-year renewal.
  • Twelve (12) hours of CPD are required per annual renewal.
  • Exactly fifty-percent (50%) of the CPD hours required of a Dispensing Audiologist shall be in courses related to hearing aid dispensing, but shall not be obtained from courses where the content focuses on products/devices from a particular manufacturer.
  • The remaining fifty-percent (50%) of the CPD hours shall be in courses relevant to the practice of audiology and shall not be in coursework focused on hearing aid dispensing.
  • One and one-half (1.5) hours of CPD may be obtained through self-study. Self-study does not include live/ interactive course offerings available via internet. Therefore, hours obtained through live/interactive course offerings are unlimited.
