Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board Sunset Review Report 2006
In 1973, the Legislature promulgated the enabling act which provided the legal authority for the development of a program to protect the public from the unauthorized and unqualified practices of speech-language pathology and audiology and from unprofessional conduct by persons licensed to practice speech-language pathology and audiology in the State of California. This act become effective January 1, 1974.
The Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board's (SLPAB) statutory mission is to ensure protection of consumers. The SLPAB further carries out its mission by setting licensing standards and enforcing the laws governing the practices of speech-language pathology and audiology under the California Business and Professions Code.
The SLPAB is composed of nine members: 3 speech-language pathologists; 3 audiologists; and 3 public members, one of which is a licensed physician and surgeon, board certified in otolaryngology. The Governor appoints the physician and surgeon member and the other six licensed members. The Senate Rules Committee and the Speaker of the Assembly each appoint one public member.
The SLPAB is under the umbrella of the Department on Consumer Affairs (DCA), which is part of the executive branch of California State Government and ensures that the public's health, safety, and welfare are protected while ensuring fair trade within the marketplace.
